This diploma program focuses on preparing students to effectively manage the responsibilities of addictions and community services practitioners in a wide variety of social assistance programs. This program will be of particular interest to students seeking training in addiction and recovery practices. This program is intended for people who are looking for a career in social services and community support, assisting people with personal and social issues, including addiction and mental health.
This program prepares graduates for employment positions with social service agencies and organizations, residential programs, homes group, shelters and housing services, community health centers, and family service organizations throughout the private and public sectors, or they may be self-employed.
Upon completion of the programs, students will reliably be able to:
- Explain the social and community services available and the role of social services workers in improving the social welfare of individuals and communities.
- Recognize at-risk behaviours across a variety of groups.
- Describe the effects of psychoactive chemicals on target populations suffering with mental illness.
- Describe the effects of mental health in relation to addiction, diagnosis, and medications used in pharmacotherapies and the impact mental health may have on individuals or communities.
- Describe and discuss the issues, defining traits, intervention, prevention, and safety issues for those suffering with mental illness.
- Articulate the impact on the client-counsellor relationship with respect to cultural and diversity issues.
- Identify resources available under the broad umbrella of the Canadian health care system.
