This program is designed to prepare and guide internationally educated nurses in the process of becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) in Canada. This includes a comprehensive coverage and description of National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS), British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), Nursing Community Assessment Service (NCAS), and National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) RN processes and test taking strategies.
Students will develop and enhance their theoretical nursing knowledge, clinical nursing skills and entry-level competencies required from a registered nurse in Canada.
Upon completion of this program, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- Speak, listen, read, and write proficiently in the English language.
- Describe the IEN process required by BCCNM.
- Detail and identify knowledge and skills required to communicate therapeutically and effectively with patients, family members, and other members of the health care team.
- Summarize and explain RN scope of practice, professional Standards, practice standards, and entry-level competencies.
- Outline and apply necessary knowledge/skills to perform a comprehensive health assessment.
- Describe the roles and functions of the community health nurse in promoting health.
- Discuss and apply the etiology, laboratory diagnostic findings, clinical manifestations, assessment, nursing, and collaborative management of patients with medical and surgical health problems.
- Explain the nursing responsibilities in safe preparation, management, administration, and documentation of medications.
- Tabulate and discuss the common mental health disorders, assessment, management, and medications.
- Explain perinatal assessment and care, and recognize and address complications associated with pregnancy
- Create and revise nursing care plans to address the unique individual needs of clients.
- Explain the legal, ethical, and interpersonal considerations when providing care.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree;
- Current Registration as an RN from the country of origin and workplace;
- Minimum of 1,000 hours of nursing experience within the last three years;
- IELTS 5.5 overall (or equivalent standardized external assessment).
This is an educational program that does not prepare students for direct entry into a regulated career. Graduates of this program will, instead, be prepared to go through the Internationally-Educated Nurse (IEN) application stages. Those who successfully complete the IEN may work in various healthcare settings, including as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN).
