This program has been designed to provide students with all of the administrative and clinical knowledge and skills required for employment as a Medical Office Administrator.
During the program students learn to understand and use medical language; perform office procedures, prepare medical records, reports, case histories, correspondence and machine dictation; schedule and confirm medical appointments; receive and communicate messages for doctors and patients; initiate and maintain confidential medical files and records; prepare financial statements and handle billing procedures including medical billing, insurance, and other claim forms; promote safety and work in a safe manner; order supplies and maintain inventory; plan and initiate procedural setups including those required for patient preparation and maintenance for supplies and equipment.
Strong focus is given to communication skills, Microsoft Office applications, accounting applications, the ability to multitask and prioritize, organizational and detail skills, professional telephone manner, confidentiality, interpersonal skills and being a team player.
Upon successful completion, students will be able to:
- Outline the typical responsibilities of a medical office administrator.
- Describe the personal and professional ethics required for success as an MOA.
- Explain how medical office administrators are responsible to healthcare-related regulations.
- Describe how a medical front office is typically managed, focusing on administrative processes and procedures.
- Explain the procedures to follow to create and maintain accurate medical documentation, especially with regards to patient records, procedural and diagnostic coding, insurance claim forms, and other healthcare documentation.
- Demonstrate knowledge of medical insurance by outlining typical claims processing procedures and explaining the difference between government and commercial health insurance plans.
- Use standard medical terminology, explain the structures and functions of the human body, including the senses and body systems.
- Use standard medical terminology, explain the structure of terms and their component parts.
- Correctly describe the body systems and related organs.
- Identify and describe the medical office administrator’s role in standard patient interactions in the medical office, including in-office diagnostic tests and procedures, specimen sampling, medication administration, and the preparation of patients for examination.
- Describe universal precautions and explain how to maintain a safe environment in the medical office, even during emergency situations.
- Outline considerations and approaches to chronic disease management.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills in the context of working as an MOA.
- Demonstrate entry-level business writing skills.
- Demonstrative intermediate use of MS software including Outlook, Word, and entry-level use of Excel.
In addition, the program will ensure that graduates are equipped with the core competencies or knowledge related to:
- Phone etiquette in a medical environment
- Booking and confirming appointments (scheduling for doctors and confirming appointments for patients and office procedures)
- MSP, private, WSBC and ICBC billing
- Ordering supplies
- Preparing examination rooms
- Aseptic technique
- Scanning documents (scanning and filing documents)
- Assisting and preparing for physical exams
- Well baby checks
- Urinalysis
- High school diploma or equivalent, or mature student status (19 years or older)
- International students must provide proof of English language proficiency through ONE of the following measures:
Minimum 50% in English 12 or 67% in Communications 12.
Minimum 50% in post-secondary level English or Communications coursework.
Successful completion of a standardized language proficiency test at or above ONE of the following standards:
Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 6
IELTS 5.5 with no band lower than 5
TOEFL iBT score of 46
Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) score of 162
Pearson Test of English (PTE-A) score of 45.4
Versant English Placement Test (VEPT) score of 46
